Most of us seem to be facing problems and discomfort with iPod Touch, iPhone and iPad iOS which is running on the latest 4.2 firmware version. In such situations, you should downgrade your iDevice to iOS 4, 4.1, 4.0.1, 4.0.2 firmware versions.

For downgrading your device running on iOS 4.2 to lower firmware versions such as iOS 4, 4.1, 4.0.1, 4.0.2, follow the instructions given below.

NOTE: Make sure that you have saved the SHSH to Cydia Server before going through this instruction set.

1. First, download the firmware file. For example, if you want to downgrade iOS 4.2 to iOS 4.1, just download the firmware file for iOS 4.1 (here’s the list of download links by Apple: iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPod Touch 2G, iPod Touch 3G, iPod Touch 4G).

2. Now, you have to edit the Hosts file.

For Windows Users:

  • Open a “Notepad” with administrator rights. To do so, right click on the icon of Notepad then select “Open as Administrator”.
  • You have to navigate to the path as follows C:/Windows/System32/drivers/etc.
  • Now, open Hosts file
  • Just put in as “74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com” at the end part of the file and save the file.

For Mac OS X Users:

  • First of all, just navigate to “Go” then go to “Folder” and then hit enter.
  • Then use “TextEdit” to open the Hosts file.
  • Now, add “74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com” at the end part of the document.
  • Select “Save As” and uncheck if no extension is present. Then save the document in .txt format on the desktop.
  • Finally, replace the old Hosts file with the created new one

3. In the third step, connect your device to PC.

4. Browse and pick your device from the list in iTunes.

5. Now go to the recovery mode of your device. To do so, press and hold home and power buttons for 10 seconds. Now release the power button but hold the home button as it is. You have to hold it until iTunes identifies device in the recovery mode.

6. Now click on the Restore button by pressing the Shift button in Windows OS and the Option button in Mac OS X.

7. Find out and select the required firmware file such as iOS 4, 4.0.1, 4.0.2 or 4.1 to downgrade iOS 4.2.

8. Exit the recovery mode. To exit from the recovery mode, you have to use special software namely Reboot.

9. Finally, just restart your iDevice.

NOTE: If any error massage such as “1004 error” is displayed, just ignore it.
