Recovery Mode and DFU Mode

What Is The Meaning of Recovery Mode and DFU Mode

Most of the people get confused with the two terms, the recovery mode and DFU mode.  Both the terms are completely different and they serve differently and perform different task.  You can easily identify in which mode your iPhone is. If your iPhone is showing connected to iTunes including display the connect icon and display the slider for emergency option, you are in Recovery mode.

On the other hand, if your screen is blank or showing only the connection icon without any slider, it means you are in DFU mode. If you are in recovery mode, you can’t bypass the iBoot, a bootloader. It means you cannot degrade your device in case of emergency.

Mostly jailbreakers prefer DFU mode because they can easily degrade their device. DFU mode allows users to bypass the iBoot and has the chances to degrade the device.   However, do remember that DFU mode requires extra time in starting up as compared to the recovery mode so have patience while entering device into DFU mode. Here are the tips to enter into DFU mode:

  1. Primarily, Turn-Off your iPhone
  2. Press and hold down the power and home button simultaneously
  3. Release only power button when the Apple logo shows on the screen and continue pressing Home button. You will get iTunes logo to get connected.
  4. Connect your iPhone and create the backup before proceeding further.

Here are the steps to enter into Recovery mode:

  1. Make sure that you already have new version of iTunes
  2. Connect the USB cable to your computer
  3. Switch-off your iPhone by pressing Power button until it displays “Slide To power off” option.
  4. Hold down the Home button while plugging your iDevice to the connected USB cable. Once the device is connected correctly, it turns-on automatically.
  5. Continue pressing the Home button until the Apple logo and “Connect to iTunes” message is displayed on the screen.  Ultimately, you will see a dialogue box, which shows you are in recovery mode.
  6. Ensure that you follow the process systematically.

These two methods are given to start your device either in recovery mode or DFU mode as per your convenience and preference. The choice is completely up to you to choose one of them. However, choosing the DFU mode will be better for the future in case you want to degrade your device.
