Treat Dogs Like Children – They Do Wonders And Save Lives Too

IT’S A DOG’S LIFE/DEATH!!

“Varun the police dog”, will always remain in the hearts and mind of the people of the police department of Koppal district. Serving for the department, he breathed his last also while in service. for the past eight years after he was recognized and taken into service on June 15 again 2002, he has truly been a friend of the department by helping solve around 15 murders, giving clues to around 90 murders cases and nab about 20 thieves. That was Varun’s great track record and this was the statistics that was all over the papers when he succumbed to death on June 15 2010.

Incidentally Varun was also the recipient of the state Rewar award, and his loss is deeply regretted. This was just a brief description of Varun, but the best part is yet to come. Varun was cremated with all the official respect, exactly the way any great leader would have been. That is what touches the heart, because not everybody takes that interest in dogs, even if they are home bred. For many, dogs at home are only for show, while some others treat them like door mats, maybe worse than that.

There are many people living in big houses, where they have servants hand to foot, and also who look after the dogs. Most often, they eat up half the money that is to be spent on the dogs. Dogs are there only to guard the house is their argument. Yes, but have any of you given thought to the fact that even dogs have a mind and feelings! I have even come across people who beat the dogs, height of cruelty! Why do they need a pet if they can’t look after the m well? Is it just for show to put the “Beware of Dogs” sign on their gates?

But they cannot be blames, for they treat their children too in the same manner. They have absolutely no time for any love and care, and it is indeed a sad plight. This makes me wonder, if dogs could turn back and talk how many of their masters would be cursed? It would bring them great pleasure to give back a taste of their own medicine. Dogs like children need a lot of care taking, in fact mach more than children. They are forever children. We begin to demand for things, and attention after a few years, but what about dogs, they have no other go than to receive the treatment you give them.

In case he spoils something or dirties the house, he will be the on the receiving end of a spanking while you should be the one to be punished for the delay. Even if you forget to feed him, all he can do is look expectantly at you. The unbearable part is when your dog falls sick, and he helplessly watches you with sad eyes. I can still recall the day my dog Bingo had a paralysis attack and could not walk, everybody in our house had cried, for the very fact that he was suffering but unable to express his pain, and also because we were not able to help him in any way.

I personally feel that the remedy for this would be to resort to mercy killing. Though it seems heartless, it is the only way to release the dog from pain. My neighbor’s dog had become very old, and was blind and deaf too. She used to bang into the walls while walking, and struggled to find her bowl. This was her everyday job, and everyday my fried would cry. Finally one day she herself took the dog to the vet for mercy killing, and when she came back her sorrow was uncontrollable. For weeks she was like that.

But that is something to be thought about. If your dog is suffering is it not better to release him? In fact you are doing him a favor by opting for mercy killing, although it does hurt. But the only solace should be that you have looked after him well, and he has to go, let us send him with a good heart!!
